PIECES
PIECES is an evolution of Lucy Guerin Inc’s annual performance program Pieces for Small Spaces. Established in 2005, Pieces for Small Spaces has supported the work of emerging and independent choreographers annually. Learn more about the history and background of Pieces for Small Spaces here.
The 2019 season will be presented by Lucy Guerin Inc and The SUBSTATION, with a season of performances this December.
PIECES offers three choreographers the opportunity to make works of 20-30 minutes that will premiere at The SUBSTATION. This refreshed format seeks to enable a deeper choreographic exploration and the space to develop a larger idea.
The selected artists will research and develop their work at WXYZ Studios, where studio space is offered in-kind. A strong focus of LGI’s support is directed towards interrogating the process of conceiving, making and rehearsing to develop bold, new ideas that challenge existing notions of dance as well as refine the artists’ own choreographic practices.
Artists are creatively supported by LGI and The SUBSTATION through discussions with Lucy Guerin, LGI’s Resident Director, Alisdair Macindoe, and the Director of The SUBSTATION, Brad Spolding.
ANNOUNCING THE 2019 CHOREOGRAPHERS
This year LGI and The SUBSTATION have engaged three incredible Melbourne based, independent Artists to create and present the first Season of PIECES.
We are excited to welcome to the 2019 PIECES cohort of choreographers, Sarah Aiken, Siobhan McKenna and Geoffrey Watson. Each of the Artists will spend two weeks in the LGI/WXYZ Studios developing their new, short works of 20 minutes for presentation at The SUBSTATION in a performance season in December.
The program also provides an ambitious, emerging lighting designer with the opportunity to collaborate with the Artists on the lighting design for each of their works. This year, Robert Larsen will join the team and work with the Artists as both the Lighting Designer and Production Manager for the project.
This is an exciting opportunity to see three, Melbourne Artists develop new and innovative dance works presenting a glimpse into the future of Australian dance.
