As part of its commitment to supporting independent dance artists in the development of their careers, LGI selects one choreographer annually as its Resident Director. Suitable for choreographers approaching mid-career, is an opportunity that focuses on supporting the individual’s specific goals and interests as they look to take their next steps as an artist. Previous holders of this role include Tra Mi Dinh, Lee Serle, Rebecca Jensen, Lilian Steiner, Benjamin Hancock, Alisdair Macindoe, Mariaa Randall, Prue Lang, Jo Lloyd, Melanie Lane, Stephanie Lake, and Antony Hamilton.
The Resident Director receives a $12,000 fee (plus superannuation) and up to 6 weeks of dedicated full-time access at WXYZ Studios to support the creative development of new work. In addition, the Resident Director will be supported with artistic and professional development activities over the course of the year. This includes access to up to 6 weeks of dedicated full-time access at WXYZ Studios. The Resident Director has regular access to LGI’s office and year-round studio program (including daily class and all workshop programs) and is invited to participate in artistic planning meetings with the Artistic Director and staff, including participation in LGI’s Curatorium and attendance as an observer at LGI Board meetings.
