On 6 May 2021, we welcomed a panel of experienced dance teachers to WXYZ Studios in North Melbourne to discuss their current ideas and approaches to teaching.
The panel featured Helen Herbertson, Jo Lloyd, Raina Peterson and Jo White, who facilitated the evening’s discussion, and follows the culmination of LGI’s inaugural Teaching Dance development program.
In a wide-ranging conversation, the panel considered questions on pedagogical practice including:
– Where does teaching locate itself in an individual’s wider dance practice and what opportunities might it offer to them?
– What should be taught? Is a daily professional class still relevant to dancers and what skills do they need to build and maintain?
– What’s needed for an artist to become a confident teacher?
This conversation was part of our Dance Dialogues series: conversations between dance artists exploring what practice is now.
Listen again to the conversation here.
If you’d like to read a transcript of the discussion, find it here as a pdf.
This event was part of the Back to Practice Program, which is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria
