Class today is Contemporary Dance w/ Sarah Aiken

Sarah’s class brings together imaginative and anatomical information, thinking inside and outside the body. We will be practical and treat ourselves well, dance with the bodies we have and find possibilities we never knew we had. With a gradual warm up of body and mind, the class will offer new tools and plenty of preparation in the lead up to some expansive phrase material.

Class will include improvisation scores and choreographically driven practice, targeted exercises, and phrase material. Class may include simple floor work, complex standing material and complex coordinations working with speed and travel.

This class is suitable for dancers with technical training. Dancers are invited to adapt material as required, however the class is generally aimed at professional dancers.

Sarah Aiken is a dancer, teacher and choreographer working and living on Wurundjeri land. Her work investigates assemblage, authorship, scale and the self, looking at the roles of audience and performer, subject and object, and connecting tangibly with audiences to consider performance as a site for empathy & exchange. Aiken is Co-director of Deep Soulful Sweats, working with Rebecca Jensen to create work that engages rigorously with participation, waste and a reckless formalism—recycling content to consider materiality and how we come together. Sarah is developing new works for stage, screen, gallery and site responsive contexts.”
