Class today is Guided Improvisation w/ Janice Florence

This class will include a combination of improvisation practices which are effective with diverse participants and developed and elaborated through years of experience of innovation and exploration in inclusive dance theatre.

We will work as individuals, in pairs and in groups. For anyone with some movement/dance experience. For people with varying access needs and dancers and teachers who are interested in working in an accessible way

This class is suitable for anyone with some dance experience and aims to be accessible to all bodies present. It allows for individual interpretation of tasks given. Physical demonstration as well as verbal instruction will be given according to participant preference.

It may include the intentional use of inclusive / accessible language, spoken instructions (i.e. material not physically demonstrated) improvisation, visualisations, working in physical contact with others (optional) and working with eyes closed.


About Janice Florence
Janice Florence trained in dance in Australia and the USA. After acquiring a physical disability, she has developed her own vision and style for directing inclusive dance theatre as the Artistic Director of Weave Movement Theatre for the past 24 years. Janice has directed seven residencies for respected artists to collaborate with the company, notably Yumi Umiumare and Michelle Heaven. She is the inaugural winner of the Australia Council National Disability Arts Award (2019). Janice’s choreography is drawn from her broad experience of contemporary improvisation-based dance practices, informed by other theatre forms. She is influenced by and contributes to on-going international enquiry and innovation in inclusive dance theatre performance.

This class is part of LGI’s Disability Action Plan ongoing commitment to improve the accessibility of LGI’s studio programs and create opportunities for Disabled and non-disabled artists to engage in inclusive practices.
